Hyderabad: Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) is exploring the deployment of artificial intelligence-based structural monitoring systems across flyovers and bridges to strengthen public safety and improve long-term infrastructure management. The proposed initiative aims to shift from conventional periodic inspections to continuous digital monitoring, enabling authorities to detect structural issues before they develop into serious safety risks.
As part of the proposal, municipal officials recently held technical discussions with an infrastructure technology firm and researchers from IIIT Hyderabad to examine the feasibility of implementing a AI bridge monitoring system across key transport structures in the Cyberabad region. The proposed technology would use a network of sensors, artificial intelligence and data analytics to continuously assess the condition of bridges and flyovers. The system is designed to identify early signs of structural stress, including cracks, excessive vibration, deflection, leakages and load-related strain. When abnormal patterns are detected, automated alerts would enable engineers to inspect and respond before conditions worsen. Urban infrastructure specialists say continuous structural health monitoring represents an important evolution in asset management. Unlike traditional inspections carried out at fixed intervals, real-time monitoring provides ongoing information about the condition of critical structures, allowing maintenance agencies to prioritise repairs based on actual performance rather than routine schedules.
