Pune Expands Dry Waste Processing Capacity Citywide
Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation has approved a new dry waste processing initiative aimed at strengthening the city’s solid waste management system, enabling the scientific handling of nearly 300 metric tonnes of non-biodegradable waste every day. The decision is expected to improve waste diversion from landfills while supporting cleaner urban environments and more sustainable resource recovery practices across the city.
The civic body’s Standing Committee cleared a proposal valued at approximately ₹6.83 crore for the collection, transportation and treatment of dry waste generated across municipal limits. The programme is designed to ensure uninterrupted movement of segregated waste from designated municipal facilities to authorised processing centres, where it will be converted into refuse-derived fuel or treated using other approved scientific methods. Municipal officials said the approved contract covers the lifting of dry waste from transfer stations, collection ramps and other designated locations before transporting it for environmentally compliant processing. The arrangement is scheduled to remain operational for six months, with an option for a limited extension depending on operational requirements and waste volumes. During the contract period, authorities expect nearly 81,000 metric tonnes of dry waste to be processed through approved facilities. Urban planners note that strengthening dry waste processing capacity has become increasingly important as Pune’s expanding population continues to generate higher volumes of municipal solid waste. Efficient recovery of recyclable and combustible materials can reduce dependence on landfill disposal while improving the city’s environmental performance.
Experts in urban sustainability have consistently highlighted that scientific processing of non-biodegradable waste forms a critical component of circular economy practices. Converting suitable waste into alternative fuel for industrial use not only reduces landfill burden but also supports resource efficiency by recovering value from materials that would otherwise remain unused. The project follows a competitive procurement process initiated earlier this year. After receiving limited participation during the first bidding round, the municipal administration invited fresh tenders before finalising the eligible bidder through technical and financial evaluation. Officials stated that the selected proposal complied with prescribed eligibility requirements and was approved following scrutiny by the municipal tender committee. Funding for the project has been allocated under the Solid Waste Management Department’s budget, with expenditure earmarked for transportation and tipping fee-related activities linked to existing waste processing infrastructure. Civic authorities have also indicated that additional financial support will be made available if operational needs increase during implementation.
Environmental specialists believe sustained investment in scientific waste management infrastructure remains essential as Indian cities seek to balance rapid urbanisation with climate resilience and public health goals. For Pune, expanding dry waste processing capacity represents another step towards reducing landfill dependency, improving waste segregation outcomes and building a more resource-efficient urban system capable of supporting long-term sustainable growth.
