Gandhinagar: Gujarat’s highway expansion programme is set to take another step forward with plans to extend the Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway to Bhavnagar, a move expected to strengthen regional connectivity, improve freight mobility and support economic development across the state’s industrial and coastal regions. Construction on the proposed extension is expected to begin within the next three months, subject to project execution schedules.
The Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway Extension is designed to improve access between Ahmedabad, the emerging Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR) and Bhavnagar, creating a faster transport corridor connecting industrial clusters, logistics hubs and port-linked economic activity. Once operational, the extended expressway is expected to substantially reduce travel time between Ahmedabad and Bhavnagar, enhancing passenger mobility and commercial transport efficiency. The announcement followed a high-level review of National Highway projects in Gujarat, where officials assessed progress on multiple strategic road infrastructure schemes, including highway widening projects, expressway upgrades and industrial connectivity corridors across the state. Urban infrastructure specialists view the extension as an important component of Gujarat’s long-term economic development strategy. Improved highway connectivity can reduce logistics costs, strengthen supply chains and facilitate faster movement of goods between manufacturing centres, export gateways and urban markets. Such investments are also expected to support future growth in Dholera, which is being developed as one of India’s flagship smart industrial regions.
The review also highlighted continued efforts to accelerate major highway projects through coordinated planning between central and state agencies. Efficient land acquisition, streamlined project approvals and interdepartmental collaboration have emerged as critical factors in delivering large-scale transport infrastructure within planned timelines. Alongside economic objectives, environmental considerations featured prominently during project discussions. Authorities directed implementing agencies to prioritise tree transplantation wherever feasible instead of large-scale tree removal during highway expansion. Environmental planners note that preserving mature tree cover can help mitigate heat stress, improve roadside biodiversity and reduce the ecological impact of transport infrastructure projects.
The Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway Extension also aligns with broader goals of creating integrated multimodal transport networks that connect highways with industrial corridors, ports and future logistics infrastructure. Such connectivity is increasingly viewed as essential for supporting balanced regional development while improving accessibility for businesses and communities. As Gujarat continues investing in high-capacity transport infrastructure, experts emphasise that long-term project success will depend on combining engineering efficiency with sustainable planning principles.
