Ahmedabad Bullet Rail Clears Major Engineering Milestone

Ahmedabad: Construction of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor has crossed a significant engineering milestone with the completion of all portal beam installations along the Ahmedabad section, enabling future high-speed trains to pass above existing railway tracks without disrupting conventional rail operations. The achievement marks steady progress on India’s first bullet train project as civil works accelerate across Gujarat.

According to the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), all 13 portal beams required for the 18-kilometre elevated stretch in Ahmedabad have now been installed. These specialised reinforced concrete structures allow the high-speed viaduct to safely cross busy railway corridors while maintaining uninterrupted operations on the conventional rail network below. National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited The final structure installed at Sabarmati is the largest of the series, weighing approximately 1,640 metric tonnes. Engineers completed the complex lifting operation using heavy crawler cranes during a carefully planned construction window, allowing railway services beneath the crossing to continue without suspension. Similar portal beam installations have also been completed over existing railway corridors in Maninagar and Vatva, where the elevated alignment intersects heavily used rail routes.

Infrastructure specialists consider portal beams among the most technically demanding elements of elevated rail construction because they must span active railway lines while meeting strict structural and operational safety standards. Their successful installation demonstrates advances in large-scale precast engineering, precision planning and construction management required for high-speed rail infrastructure. The Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor is India’s first dedicated bullet train project and is expected to transform inter-city transport between two of the country’s largest economic regions. Once operational, the system aims to reduce travel times significantly while offering an alternative to short-haul air travel and long-distance road transport. Urban mobility experts note that high-speed rail can support lower transport emissions when integrated with clean energy and efficient public transport systems, contributing to more sustainable regional connectivity.

Ahmedabad plays a central role in the project through the Sabarmati Multimodal Transport Hub, which is being developed to integrate high-speed rail with conventional rail, metro services and other public transport networks. Such multimodal connectivity is expected to improve passenger transfers while strengthening the city’s position as a major transport gateway in western India. With major structural works progressing rapidly across Gujarat, attention is gradually shifting towards track installation, systems integration, signalling and operational testing before commercial services begin. Railway authorities have indicated that trial operations on sections of the Gujarat alignment are expected before full commissioning of the corridor.As construction advances, the project continues to serve as a benchmark for complex rail engineering in India. Beyond faster travel, its long-term success will depend on seamless multimodal integration, efficient station planning and sustainable urban development around high-speed rail corridors, ensuring that infrastructure investment translates into broader economic and mobility benefits.
