Construction of the underground section of Kolkata’s Purple Line has crossed a significant engineering milestone after one of the tunnel boring machines completed its first excavation stretch between Khidderpore and Victoria. The achievement strengthens progress on the long-delayed Kolkata Purple Line, a corridor expected to reshape mobility across the city’s southern neighbourhoods while improving access to central business districts and reducing dependence on road transport.
The completed tunnel represents the first phase of underground construction on the Joka–Esplanade Metro corridor, where twin tunnels are being built beneath one of Kolkata’s most densely developed and historically sensitive urban zones.
