The Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar corridor has received a significant infrastructure upgrade with the opening of Gujarat’s first urban cable-stayed flyover and the launch of a bridge expansion project aimed at easing congestion along one of the state’s busiest transport routes. Together, the projects are expected to improve traffic efficiency, strengthen regional connectivity and support future mobility demand across the twin-city metropolitan region.
The newly inaugurated 1.48-kilometre flyover at Bhat Circle has been developed through a joint initiative of the state’s Roads and Buildings Department and the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA). Designed as a grade-separated junction, the structure enables uninterrupted movement between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, while vehicles travelling along the Sardar Patel Ring Road continue beneath the elevated corridor. Transport planners expect the new configuration to reduce delays at Bhat Circle, a major intersection that handles traffic from the airport corridor, the Ring Road and surrounding urban growth areas. Dedicated service roads have also been developed to improve connectivity towards Vadodara, Surat and adjoining transport corridors, supporting smoother traffic distribution across the network.
Alongside the flyover’s inauguration, work has been initiated to expand the existing bridge over the Narmada Main Canal between Koba Circle and Bhat Circle. The project will increase capacity from six lanes to twelve lanes by constructing additional three-lane bridges on either side of the existing structure, preparing the corridor for rising vehicle volumes in the coming years. The Ahmedabad Gandhinagar corridor serves as one of Gujarat’s most important economic and administrative links, connecting the state’s commercial capital with its administrative headquarters, educational institutions, industrial clusters and airport infrastructure. As urbanisation accelerates across the metropolitan region, demand for efficient transport infrastructure continues to increase.
Urban mobility specialists note that grade-separated intersections and corridor widening projects can improve travel reliability by reducing bottlenecks and enhancing traffic flow. However, they emphasise that long-term transport planning should also integrate public transport, pedestrian infrastructure and cycling networks to create a balanced and sustainable mobility ecosystem. The latest projects form part of broader efforts to modernise road infrastructure while supporting economic growth across the Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar urban region. Improved connectivity can strengthen business activity, logistics and daily commuting, while reducing congestion-related travel delays and fuel consumption. As traffic demand continues to grow, planners suggest that future investments should combine road capacity enhancement with intelligent traffic management and multimodal transport integration. Strengthening the Ahmedabad Gandhinagar corridor through coordinated infrastructure development will be essential to maintaining mobility, improving urban resilience and supporting sustainable regional expansion.
