The Maharashtra government is evaluating a proposal to expand the Mumbai Pune Expressway from six to ten lanes, a move aimed at addressing mounting traffic demand on one of India’s busiest intercity transport corridors. The revised proposal, submitted by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), seeks approval for a major capacity upgrade that could reshape passenger and freight movement between the state’s two largest economic centres over the coming decade. If approved, the project is expected to be implemented through the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, under which a private concessionaire would finance, construct, operate and maintain the expanded corridor while recovering investment through toll revenues over an agreed concession period. Subject to government clearance, construction is expected to commence in 2027 with completion targeted by the end of the decade.
The 94.6-kilometre Mumbai Pune Expressway, India’s first access-controlled expressway, has witnessed sustained growth in vehicle volumes since opening more than two decades ago. Daily traffic now substantially exceeds original design assumptions, with weekday commuter flows and weekend travel placing increasing pressure on the highway’s carrying capacity. Transport analysts note that continued annual traffic growth, coupled with expanding logistics demand, has strengthened the case for additional road capacity. Future infrastructure projects are also expected to accelerate demand along the corridor. While the proposed expansion promises long-term operational benefits, executing the project presents significant engineering and traffic management challenges.
Unlike constructing a new highway, widening an active expressway requires maintaining uninterrupted traffic flow while carrying out large-scale civil works. Experts suggest that phased construction, advanced traffic planning and strict safety protocols will be essential to minimise disruption for commuters and freight operators throughout the implementation period. Urban mobility specialists also emphasise that expanding the Mumbai Pune Expressway should form part of a broader multimodal transport strategy rather than serving as a standalone solution to congestion. Continued investment in high-capacity public transport, rail freight, integrated logistics infrastructure and sustainable mobility networks will remain important for managing long-term travel demand while reducing carbon emissions associated with private vehicle growth. The proposal follows recent investments in strategic improvements along the corridor, including the Missing Link project designed to bypass the accident-prone Khandala ghat section. Together, these upgrades aim to improve journey reliability, strengthen road safety and enhance regional economic competitiveness by reducing travel delays between Mumbai and Pune.
As the state reviews the revised funding proposal, the project represents more than a highway expansion. Its success will depend on balancing capacity enhancement with climate resilience, construction safety and integrated transport planning.
