New Delhi: Delhi is set to expand its clean public transport network with the addition of 300 electric buses, a move expected to improve service frequency on heavily used corridors while extending connectivity to neighbourhoods that remain underserved by larger buses.
The fleet expansion comes as the capital attempts to reduce commuter waiting times, improve access to public transport and advance its transition towards a lower-emission mobility system. The new buses are scheduled to enter service following a public launch on 7 July. Transport authorities intend to deploy them first on routes experiencing the highest passenger demand, where overcrowding and long waiting periods continue to affect daily commuters. Urban mobility experts note that increasing service frequency on existing corridors can often deliver greater commuter benefits than introducing entirely new routes, particularly in densely populated parts of the city. Most of the incoming vehicles are designed in a compact nine-metre configuration, allowing them to navigate narrower streets and residential areas where standard buses face operational challenges. Better feeder services could also encourage greater use of metro and bus networks together, reducing dependence on private vehicles for short-distance travel. Officials associated with the transport system indicate that expanding the electric fleet forms part of a broader strategy to improve the reliability and accessibility of public transport rather than focusing solely on fleet numbers. Urban planners argue that alongside new buses, investments in charging infrastructure, depot capacity, route planning and real-time passenger information will determine whether the expanded network delivers measurable improvements in commuter experience. The city government has outlined an ambitious roadmap to expand the overall bus fleet to around 7,500 vehicles by the end of the year while working towards a long-term target of 14,000 electric buses by 2029. Transport specialists, however, emphasise that achieving these goals will depend not only on vehicle procurement but also on operational efficiency, maintenance standards and consistent service delivery across the network.
