Pune: Intense monsoon rainfall disrupted both road and rail connectivity between Pune and Mumbai on Monday after landslides struck the Western Ghats, forcing traffic diversions on the newly operational Missing Link section of the expressway and interrupting railway services through the Bhor Ghat corridor. The twin disruptions highlight the growing challenge of maintaining reliable transport infrastructure as extreme weather events become more frequent across Maharashtra.

Authorities temporarily closed the Mumbai-bound carriageway of the Pune Missing Link after debris from a rain-triggered landslide reached the approach near one of the tunnel exits. Emergency teams and highway engineers were deployed to clear the affected section while traffic was diverted to the older expressway alignment as a precaution to protect motorists. The Missing Link, inaugurated earlier this year, was designed to improve travel efficiency by shortening the Pune–Mumbai journey through a series of tunnels and viaducts across the Sahyadri range. However, the latest incident demonstrates that even newly engineered infrastructure must contend with the environmental realities of one of India’s most rainfall-intensive mountain corridors. Visuals from the site showed rainwater flowing down rocky tunnel faces while machinery worked to remove mud and fallen debris. Although such drainage flows are common during intense monsoon spells, transport experts say prolonged rainfall combined with unstable slopes can increase pressure on surrounding geological formations, requiring constant monitoring and preventive maintenance.

At the same time, railway operations between Pune and Mumbai were suspended after multiple landslides blocked tracks in the Bhor Ghat section near Karjat and Lonavala. Several passenger services were cancelled, diverted or rescheduled as railway authorities prioritised restoration and safety inspections before resuming operations. The simultaneous disruption of road and rail services illustrates the strategic importance of the Pune–Mumbai transport corridor, which supports daily commuter movement, industrial supply chains, tourism and commercial activity between Maharashtra’s two largest urban economies. Any prolonged interruption has implications for logistics, workforce mobility and regional productivity, particularly during the peak monsoon season. Urban planners believe the incident underscores the importance of integrating climate resilience into infrastructure planning and long-term asset management. Beyond engineering design, transport corridors passing through ecologically sensitive landscapes require advanced slope stabilisation, real-time geological monitoring, efficient stormwater drainage and predictive weather-based operational planning to minimise disruptions.

The Pune Missing Link and adjoining transport infrastructure are expected to remain under close observation until rainfall intensity eases. Authorities continue to advise travellers to monitor official traffic and railway updates before undertaking intercity journeys. As climate variability increases across the Western Ghats, experts argue that resilient transport systems will depend not only on new infrastructure investments but also on continuous environmental monitoring, coordinated emergency response and adaptive maintenance strategies capable of keeping critical mobility networks operational during extreme weather events.
