Kolkata’s busiest metro corridor is set for a major infrastructure upgrade after the Centre approved ₹671.72 crore for modernising the Blue Line’s electrical systems, a move expected to improve service reliability, reduce train waiting times and strengthen the city’s public transport network. The investment comes as passenger demand continues to grow, making dependable mass transit increasingly critical for sustainable urban mobility and lower transport emissions.

The funding package is aimed at strengthening the nearly four-decade-old North-South Metro corridor, which remains the backbone of Kolkata’s rail-based public transport. Officials have indicated that the works will focus on expanding power supply capacity through additional traction substations while replacing ageing electrical equipment that has reached the end of its operational life. These upgrades are intended to create the technical capability required for operating trains at shorter intervals without compromising safety or system stability.A significant portion of the allocation has been earmarked for installing new traction substations across the corridor, enabling electricity to be supplied more efficiently to metro trains. The remaining funds will support the replacement of transformers, circuit breakers, rectifiers and associated power distribution infrastructure.

Engineers believe that modernising these systems is essential before further improvements in train frequency or network capacity can be introduced.The Kolkata Blue Line upgrade is expected to benefit hundreds of thousands of daily commuters who depend on the corridor for travel between northern and southern parts of the city. Transport specialists note that reducing train headways can help ease overcrowding during peak hours, improve travel reliability and encourage more residents to shift from private vehicles to public transport. Such a transition supports lower congestion, improved air quality and reduced urban carbon emissions while making mobility more accessible for a wider section of the population.Urban planners also view the investment as an opportunity to improve the resilience of one of India’s oldest metro systems. Much of the existing electrical network dates back to the original construction phase, when technical standards and passenger volumes differed considerably from present-day requirements. Upgrading these assets is expected to reduce energy losses, improve operational efficiency and create a stronger foundation for future signalling and capacity enhancements.

The Kolkata Blue Line upgrade forms part of a broader effort to modernise urban transport infrastructure across the metropolitan region as demand for reliable mass transit continues to increase. While engineering works will be carried out in phases, transport experts say sustained investment in maintenance and system renewal will remain essential to ensure that ageing metro infrastructure can continue supporting economic activity, inclusive urban growth and climate-conscious mobility in one of India’s most densely populated cities.
