India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper service is set to begin operations on the Guwahati–Kolkata corridor, marking a significant expansion of long-distance rail connectivity across eastern India. The overnight service is expected to improve mobility between two major economic centres while supporting faster passenger movement, regional trade and more sustainable intercity transport. Railway authorities have confirmed that the route has completed testing and certification, with the inaugural service expected shortly.
The introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper represents a shift in India’s premium rail strategy by extending the semi-high-speed network beyond daytime journeys into overnight travel. The route links Assam with West Bengal, creating a faster connection for business travellers, students, tourists and families who regularly move between the Northeast and eastern India.
