Authorities have initiated steps towards a long-term drainage strategy for the flood-prone Matigara stretch along Asian Highway-2, responding to recurring monsoon waterlogging that has disrupted traffic, affected businesses and exposed infrastructure weaknesses in one of North Bengal’s busiest transport corridors. The proposed intervention signals a shift from temporary flood responses towards more durable urban resilience measures with implications for mobility, public safety and regional economic activity.
The proposed Matigara drainage solution follows repeated complaints from residents and commuters who have experienced severe water accumulation during heavy rainfall. The affected corridor forms a critical gateway connecting Siliguri with neighbouring districts, the Bagdogra airport region and cross-border trade routes, making uninterrupted movement essential for both local and regional economies.
