NCR Brick Industry Faces Fresh Pollution Scrutiny

Across the National Capital Region, a fresh environmental audit has exposed widespread non-compliance among brick manufacturing units, raising concerns over the effectiveness of one of North India’s most critical clean-air interventions.

Field assessments conducted across industrial belts in western Uttar Pradesh and Haryana indicate that several brick kilns continue to rely on banned fossil fuels despite regulatory directives aimed at reducing winter pollution. The findings are significant for Delhi, where regional emissions remain a major contributor to hazardous particulate levels, directly affecting public health, construction activity and urban liveability. The investigation reviewed nearly 300 kiln sites over two years across districts including Ghaziabad, Sonipat, Panipat and Jhajjar. While operators had formally shifted to zig-zag kiln systems a combustion design meant to improve fuel efficiency and lower emissions on-ground inspections suggest many installations are functioning far below environmental standards.

A key concern flagged in the review was the continued use of coal-based inputs and industrial carbon residue as alternative fuel sources. Environmental experts say this weakens the intended gains of the coal ban and creates an unregulated emissions burden at a time when NCR cities are under pressure to meet stricter air quality targets. Structural deficiencies inside the kilns are compounding the problem. Many units were found with damaged insulation walls, uneven plastering and widened combustion trenches beyond approved limits. Such modifications, according to technical consultants, can sharply increase heat loss, forcing operators to burn more fuel for the same output. This makes the brick kiln pollution challenge not only an environmental issue but also an efficiency and compliance failure. For rapidly urbanising regions like Delhi-NCR, the implications are deeper. Brick remains a backbone material for housing, warehousing and road infrastructure.

Yet the sector’s carbon footprint continues to grow alongside demand from real estate expansion. Urban planners warn that without cleaner production methods, the region risks offsetting gains made in electric mobility, green buildings and dust-control systems. Another notable gap is ecological buffering. A majority of sites lacked tree cover or green barriers, which are considered essential in industrial zoning to absorb dust and improve local air resilience. In peri-urban settlements where labour colonies and villages often sit close to kiln clusters, exposure risks remain high. Policy analysts say enforcement alone may not solve the brick kiln pollution problem. The sector requires access to cleaner biomass fuels, standardised technology retrofits and affordable financing to transition. As NCR cities push toward climate-resilient growth, industrial decarbonisation is likely to become as central to urban planning as roads, housing and transit infrastructure.
