A major road infrastructure upgrade in north Delhi is approaching completion as authorities prepare to open the Delhi Mukarba Chowk underpass to traffic later this month. The project, designed to ease congestion at one of the capital’s busiest intersections along the Outer Ring Road corridor, aims to streamline vehicle movement between residential neighbourhoods and commercial hubs in the city’s northern districts. Construction teams are currently finishing surface works and structural detailing after completing the core engineering phase of the underpass. Officials overseeing the project say road surfacing, wall finishing and approach road development are now underway as the final stages before traffic operations begin.

The Delhi Mukarba Chowk underpass forms part of a broader decongestion plan at the critical junction where multiple arterial routes converge. The location experiences heavy traffic volumes from both local commuters and vehicles travelling between Delhi and neighbouring Haryana. Urban mobility experts note that intersections such as Mukarba Chowk often become bottlenecks due to a combination of high traffic flow, signal delays and merging road corridors. Grade-separated infrastructure like underpasses is frequently used in dense metropolitan networks to reduce intersection conflicts and maintain traffic flow. The project was initiated in 2022 as part of efforts to address persistent traffic congestion in the area. However, its timeline extended beyond initial projections due to challenges including relocation of underground utilities and land-related issues—common obstacles in large urban infrastructure works in densely developed districts. Once operational, the Delhi Mukarba Chowk underpass is expected to reduce travel time for commuters moving between Rohini, Badli and Shalimar Bagh, while also improving access to important economic nodes such as Azadpur’s wholesale market. Transport officials indicate that the new route will allow vehicles to avoid longer detours previously required through elevated loops and service roads around the junction.

The design also incorporates multiple movement channels to separate different traffic flows. Dedicated sections have been created for pedestrians and non-motorised transport users, allowing safer crossings across the busy Outer Ring Road corridor. Transport planners say such features are increasingly integrated into road infrastructure to improve accessibility for metro commuters and local residents. The proximity of the underpass to a major metro station further highlights the importance of integrating road and public transport infrastructure. By improving last-mile connectivity and reducing traffic congestion around transit hubs, such projects can strengthen the overall efficiency of urban mobility networks. From an economic perspective, smoother traffic movement along the Outer Ring Road can also support logistics efficiency for businesses operating in the surrounding industrial and wholesale trade districts. Urban planners caution that while underpasses can significantly reduce congestion at specific intersections, long-term mobility improvements in megacities depend on balanced investments in public transport, non-motorised infrastructure and smart traffic management systems.

With final works nearing completion, the opening of the Delhi Mukarba Chowk underpass is expected to provide immediate relief to commuters in north Delhi while contributing to the city’s broader efforts to modernise road infrastructure and improve daily travel conditions.
