Coastal line doubling moves ahead in Kerala

Rail capacity expansion along Kerala’s busy coastal corridor has moved a step forward, with the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for doubling the Mararikulam–Alappuzha section now ready for submission to the Railway Board. Estimated at ₹205 crore, the project forms a crucial segment of the broader effort to decongest the Ernakulam–Kayamkulam coastal route. The Mararikulam–Alappuzha stretch is part of the 69-kilometre corridor between Ernakulam and Ambalappuzha, of which 45 kilometres remain single-lined. Railway officials expect swift clearance once the DPR reaches the Board, given that adjacent sections have already secured financial sanction.

Last month, the Railway Ministry approved ₹324 crore for doubling the Ambalappuzha–Alappuzha section. Earlier, a revised estimate of ₹430 crore was cleared for the 14-kilometre Thuravoor–Mararikulam segment, while the Alappuzha–Ambalappuzha reach carries an estimated cost of ₹313 crore. Instead of executing the works as a single package, authorities have opted to implement them in three phases to accelerate progress and streamline administrative procedures. At present, around 35 trains operate daily along this corridor, which forms part of the vital coastal alignment connecting Kochi with southern districts. The absence of continuous double lines often forces passenger and express services to halt at crossing stations while priority trains pass, resulting in cascading delays. Once doubling is complete, officials estimate that up to nine additional trains can be introduced each day, significantly improving timetable flexibility.

The section between Ambalappuzha and Kayamkulam is already double-lined, creating a partial capacity advantage in the southern segment. Meanwhile, land acquisition has been completed for the 7.71-kilometre Ernakulam–Kumbalam stretch, where follow-up works are progressing. Approvals are also in place for the Kumbalam–Thuravoor (15.59 km) and Thuravoor–Mararikulam (21.10 km) segments.Railway authorities are fully funding the doubling works, while the Kerala government is facilitating land acquisition — a coordination model that has become central to infrastructure rollout in the state. Analysts note that coastal line augmentation is particularly important because the inland Kottayam route already operates as a double line, making the coastal alignment comparatively constrained.

Beyond increasing train frequency, doubling is expected to enhance operational safety and reduce energy consumption by minimising idling time. For commuters and freight operators, shorter turnaround times could translate into improved reliability and better integration with port-linked logistics near Kochi. With the DPR now prepared and prior segments sanctioned, the Mararikulam–Alappuzha rail doubling represents a decisive step toward unlocking the full potential of Kerala’s coastal railway spine. The pace of approvals in the coming months will determine how quickly the corridor transitions from a bottleneck-prone route to a high-capacity passenger and freight artery.
