Thane: The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) is taking decisive steps to tackle the persistent issue of debris dumping in the extensive mangrove and wetland regions within its jurisdiction.
Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao revealed on Thursday that the corporation has devised an action plan aimed at curbing such unlawful activities. Under the new strategy, the municipal administration, in collaboration with the district revenue department, will undertake the crucial task of identifying and demarcating a 50-metre buffer zone along the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ). This measure seeks to prevent unauthorised construction and dumping activities in ecologically sensitive areas.
To enforce strict vigilance, the TMC will establish round-the-clock monitoring at entry points to the city, particularly focusing on intercepting dumpers transporting debris from Mumbai to Thane for illegal disposal. Commissioner Rao emphasised the importance of implementing temporary demarcations to notify residents of any projects suspected of encroaching upon restricted zones. Instances of vehicles trespassing city limits and unlawfully discarding debris in environmentally critical zones have prompted heightened surveillance at key entry points, including Anand Nagar, LBS Road, Kalwa, Mumbra, Diva, and Napata. Officials will conduct rigorous screening procedures, allowing entry only to dumpers with legitimate permissions destined for authorised recycling facilities.
This proactive approach underscores the TMC’s commitment to preserving the ecological integrity of Thane’s mangrove and wetland ecosystems. By deploying stringent measures and enhancing monitoring mechanisms, the corporation aims to deter and apprehend perpetrators engaged in illegal debris dumping, thereby safeguarding the region’s natural resources.
