Lucknow Metro Floats Tender for Vasantkunj Depot Corridor

Lucknow has taken another concrete step toward completing its long-planned East-West Metro Corridor with the issuance of a major construction tender for an advanced depot facility at Vasantkunj, a strategic node in the expanding urban rail network.

The tender, valued at approximately ₹150 crore, was floated this week by the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) as part of preparations for the new corridor connecting Charbagh to Vasantkunj, signalling progress on infrastructure that is expected to enhance urban mobility, reduce surface traffic and support sustainable city growth. The tender covers the construction of the depot complex — a facility essential for the maintenance, inspection and stabling of train sets operating on the East-West line. Designed along the lines of the existing Transport Nagar depot on Lucknow Metro’s North-South corridor, the Vasantkunj facility will feature modern, technology-driven systems such as synchronized pit and mobile jack machines for lifting operations, automatic train washing plants, axle maintenance tools, and specialised safety equipment. Urban transport planners say that depots are more than just service yards: they form critical operational infrastructure that underpins the reliability, frequency and safety of metro networks.

In rapidly growing cities like Lucknow, robust depot capacity can reduce downtime, streamline fleet management and support expansion of service hours — all of which can make metro systems viable alternatives to private vehicle use. Analysts also note that integrating such facilities early in project cycles improves overall logistics planning and reduces construction-phase disruptions for riders. The issuance of the depot tender follows earlier contract awards on the East-West line, including the consultancy engagement for detailed design work and civil contracts for the elevated section between Vasantkunj and Thakurganj. Collectively, these tenders mark a transition from planning to execution, with civil works and key infrastructure contracts now underway. Once completed, the East-West Corridor is expected to run roughly 11 kilometres and connect densely populated and historically underserved neighbourhoods such as Aminabad, Chowk and other central markets to outlying zones like Vasantkunj, where access to rapid transit has been limited.

Metropolitan planners say the line will not only reduce travel times but also redistribute commuter loads across the broader metro network, supporting more balanced urban mobility patterns. Environmental sustainability is integral to depot design and corridor planning. Officials involved in the project emphasise that modern depot facilities incorporate energy-efficient systems and environmental safeguards such as controlled wastewater management and dust mitigation measures, which align with broader goals of reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality in urban corridors. However, the success of the depot and the broader metro expansion hinges on sustained funding, timely contract award and effective coordination with utility agencies and municipal authorities. Integration with last-mile transport options — such as feeder buses, cycle lanes and pedestrian access — will be essential to translate infrastructure investments into tangible commuter convenience.

As Lucknow accelerates the East-West Metro project toward construction, the Vasantkunj depot tender represents a pivotal milestone anchoring the network’s operational foundation. Its progress will be watched closely by urban planners and residents alike as the city continues to expand its public transport footprint and strengthen its climate-resilient mobility infrastructure.
