Eastern Railway has awarded new contracts for the rollout of upgraded Passenger Information Systems across stations in the Howrah Division, reinforcing the shift towards digitally enabled rail infrastructure in eastern India. The projects, valued at approximately ₹4.45 crore and secured by MIC Electronics through competitive bidding, are expected to be completed within six months. 

The scope covers the design, installation, testing and commissioning of integrated Passenger Information Systems, including electronic display boards and communication interfaces. These systems are intended to improve the clarity and timeliness of announcements, train schedules and platform updates across high-footfall stations under the division. Howrah Division forms one of the busiest rail corridors in the country, connecting Kolkata to industrial belts and regional towns. Urban mobility experts say investments in Passenger Information Systems are no longer peripheral upgrades but essential components of modern transport governance. Accurate, real-time information reduces platform congestion, minimises confusion during service disruptions and improves safety outcomes for passengers.

Rail infrastructure analysts note that digital display and communication systems also support operational efficiency.
