Mumbai’s Harbour Line has witnessed a remarkable surge in commuter adoption of air-conditioned (AC) local train services, reflecting a shift in passenger preferences towards comfort and efficiency on one of the city’s busiest suburban corridors. Between 26 January and 10 February 2026, over 6.40 lakh passengers travelled on these services, highlighting the growing demand for premium suburban mobility options.
Central Railway officials reported that the AC locals accommodated an average of 40,017 daily riders over the 16-day period. The new services, designed to offer enhanced travel comfort, have not only provided a more pleasant commuting experience but have also generated significant revenue. Ticket sales during this short period contributed INR 2.38 crore, with season tickets accounting for INR 1.79 crore and journey tickets generating INR 59 lakh. Transport analysts suggest that the success of AC suburban trains aligns with broader trends in urban mobility, where commuters increasingly prioritise safe, clean, and climate-controlled travel over traditional general compartments. A senior railway official noted that providing varied coach types, including AC options, encourages inclusive ridership, catering to professionals, elderly passengers, and long-distance daily travellers who benefit from improved seating and onboard amenities.
