Govt Considers Central Data Repository for Monitoring Rooftop Solar Power Generation

The Indian government is considering the creation of a central data repository to monitor real-time rooftop solar power generation. This initiative, led by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, seeks to streamline the tracking of solar generation data, which is currently stored at the consumer level and with power distribution companies. The data is embedded in the inverters of rooftop solar systems and is accessible via a wireless internet connection or SIM card. However, the government is looking at a centralized approach to improve monitoring for better planning and scheduling of electricity.

A key component of this effort is the ambitious PM Suryaghar Muft Bijli Yojana, launched in February, which aims to install 1 crore rooftop solar systems in the residential sector by FY27 with an investment of ₹75,021 crore. Since its launch, 1.45 crore households have registered under the scheme, and 26.38 lakh consumers have applied for rooftop installations. So far, 6.34 lakh installations have been reported on the national portal, with subsidies released to 3.66 lakh applicants. While the data for rooftop solar generation is already available at the consumer level, the government believes that a central repository could offer a more comprehensive and real-time monitoring system. This would help policymakers and energy planners to track solar generation patterns across the country, facilitating more efficient energy distribution. Such data could also play a crucial role in optimizing grid operations, ensuring better use of renewable energy, and reducing dependency on conventional power sources.

To achieve this, the government is working with various agencies to develop the necessary mechanisms to collect, store, and access this data centrally. This centralized system would help in identifying trends, improving grid integration, and aiding in better policy formulation regarding renewable energy resources. The government’s efforts reflect its commitment to promoting solar energy adoption and achieving its renewable energy targets. The centralized monitoring system would ensure that the growth of rooftop solar power is efficiently managed and integrated into the country’s energy framework, paving the way for a greener and more sustainable future.
