Zero Casualty Mandate GHMC’s Monsoon Action Plan

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has intensified its preparedness strategies, aiming for zero loss of life and property. This initiative, spearheaded by GHMC Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi and Transport and Backward Classes Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, underscores the importance of collective civic action to combat the monsoon’s challenges effectively.

During a review meeting held at the GHMC Head Office on June 12, 2024, Minister Prabhakar emphasised the need for an integrated approach involving all departments and leaders, transcending political affiliations. “Our objective is clear – we must ensure no lives are lost and property remains undamaged during this monsoon,” stated Prabhakar, highlighting the urgency of the matter. Key focal areas identified include the resolution of water-logging issues, evacuation of precarious structures, and a comprehensive audit of stormwater drains (nalas). The minister also stressed the importance of maintaining electrical infrastructure and upholding stringent sanitation standards to prevent infections, including measures against dog bites.

GHMC officials elaborated on the multi-pronged strategy being deployed. An in-charge official noted that multiple reviews have been conducted, providing explicit instructions for necessary arrangements. Significant progress has been made in identifying 141 water-logging points across the city, with ongoing works to mitigate these risks. To ensure rapid response to emergencies, GHMC has mobilised Monsoon Emergency Teams and Mobile Emergency Teams, prepared to operate around the clock. As part of the nala safety audit, 203 officers have been designated as nodal officers in areas identified as accident-prone.

The GHMC has also implemented a ban on cellar digging during the monsoon season. Additionally, old buildings and labour camps are being systematically evacuated, and weak compound walls and other vulnerable structures are being identified and demolished. These measures aim to prevent any untoward incidents during the season. The monsoon action plan also places a strong emphasis on de-silting stormwater drains to ensure free flow and prevent blockages. Effective sanitation measures are being prioritised to reduce the risk of waterborne diseases and other health hazards.

This comprehensive approach by GHMC underscores a commitment to safeguarding the city’s residents and infrastructure. The collaborative effort, involving various departments and community leaders, reflects a robust and proactive stance against the challenges posed by the monsoon. By focusing on detailed planning and prompt execution, GHMC aims to navigate the monsoon season with minimal disruption and maximum safety.
