Zelio Ebikes Launches Affordable E-Rickshaws Tanga Butterfly and Tanga SS for Eco-Friendly Last-Mile Connectivity

Zelio Ebikes, a rising player in India’s electric vehicle (EV) market, has recently introduced two e-rickshaw models—the Tanga Butterfly and Tanga SS—designed to offer an affordable and eco-friendly alternative for last-mile connectivity. These models, revealed last month at the EV India Expo 2024, are priced at Rs. 1.45 lakh and Rs. 1.40 lakh (ex-showroom), respectively, marking Zelio’s strategic entry into the rapidly growing e-rickshaw segment. Manufactured to cater to urban and semi-urban commuters, these e-rickshaws aim to provide a cleaner, more efficient solution for transportation in India’s bustling cities and rural areas.

The Tanga Butterfly and Tanga SS boast impressive powertrains that feature a 1200W motor coupled with a 48/60V 135Ah Eastman battery. This combination enables both models to achieve a top speed of 30 km/h, with a range of up to 100 km on a single charge, making them perfect for daily commutes. Charging takes approximately eight hours, with an SMPS charger that ensures protection against voltage fluctuations for added safety. In terms of performance and comfort, the Tanga Butterfly and Tanga SS are equipped with advanced braking systems, including front lever-operated drum brakes, rear paddle-operated drum brakes, and a mechanical parking brake. Both models are designed to provide a smooth ride with 43mm telescopic hydraulic shock absorbers at the front and leaf spring shockers at the rear. Additionally, the vehicles feature TVS 3.75-12 mm tyres, ensuring better road grip and stability.

The vehicles come with a high-rigidity monocoque frame, promising durability and safety for both drivers and passengers. In terms of design, the Tanga Butterfly and Tanga SS share similar dimensions, with a wheelbase of 2030 mm, a length of 2690 mm, a width of 1000 mm, and a height of 1710 mm, offering ample space for passengers and cargo. Ground clearance stands at 200 mm, making them ideal for navigating city streets and semi-urban areas. Both models are equipped with numerous features for enhanced comfort, such as a wide front glass with a wiper, FM radio with double speakers, LED headlamps with DRL, central locking, and a digital meter. They also come with practical accessories like a first-aid kit, fire extinguisher, and tool kit, ensuring safety and convenience on every ride. The Tanga Butterfly is available in multiple colour options, including Red, Grey, White, Sky Blue, and Military Green, while the Tanga SS comes in Blue, Red, Sea Blue, Parrot Green, and Grey.

This launch marks an important step for Zelio as it seeks to make a meaningful impact in the EV space. Kunal Arya, the Co-Founder and Managing Director of Zelio Ebikes, emphasised that the company aims to provide the same level of innovation, safety, and affordability that has helped establish Zelio’s reputation. The company is also offering financing options through Akasha and Try Wheels to make the purchase process easier for customers.

The introduction of Tanga Butterfly and Tanga SS could have significant implications for the traditional auto rickshaw market. As electric vehicles continue to gain traction, there is a growing likelihood that e-rickshaws will replace their petrol and diesel counterparts, providing a cleaner, more cost-effective mode of transport. The shift to electric models like the Tanga Butterfly and Tanga SS could lead to increased demand for eco-friendly transportation options, ultimately reducing pollution and fuel dependency. This transition could reshape the future of last-mile connectivity in India, offering a sustainable solution for daily commuters while transforming the auto rickshaw tradition. With over 273 dealerships and 200,000 customers, Zelio is expanding rapidly and plans to reach 400 dealerships by March 2025. As the company continues to promote sustainable transportation across India, the launch of these new e-rickshaws will play a crucial role in supporting India’s push toward electric mobility and a greener future.
