Z-Morh Tunnel Boosts Srinagar-Leh Highway Access

Z-Morh Tunnel by September heralds a new era of connectivity for the Srinagar-Leh National Highway, marking a pivotal advancement in regional infrastructure. This state-of-the-art tunnel is set to significantly enhance year-round access to Sonamarg and, eventually, to Ladakh, addressing long-standing challenges related to seasonal closures on this vital route.

Historically, the Srinagar-Leh highway has been plagued by severe winter conditions, including heavy snowfall and avalanches, which have rendered it impassable for extended periods. The Z-Morh Tunnel, a product of cutting-edge engineering and investment of approximately Rs 2,400 crores, promises to mitigate these disruptions. Constructed using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method, the tunnel stands as a testament to modern engineering solutions tailored to the unique geological challenges of the Himalayan region.

Beyond its technical achievements, the Z-Morh Tunnel is a crucial development for the local population, particularly the residents of Ganderbal district and surrounding areas. Previously isolated during winter months, residents of Gagangir and Sonamarg faced severe accessibility issues. The tunnel’s completion will reduce travel time between these locations to just 30 minutes, transforming the daily commute and providing reliable access year-round. For tourism, the impact is transformative. Sonamarg, known for its breathtaking landscapes, has traditionally been a summer destination. The new tunnel opens the possibility for winter tourism, potentially revitalising the local economy by extending the tourist season and creating new business and employment opportunities.

From a strategic perspective, the Z-Morh Tunnel also holds significant military importance. Ladakh’s strategic relevance necessitates reliable logistical support to remote areas, and this tunnel will ensure continuous, uninterrupted supply chains to soldiers stationed in the region. The anticipated Zojila Tunnel, which will follow, will further bolster connectivity, reinforcing the entire route’s accessibility.

This project, the first phase of a broader initiative, highlights a vision for comprehensive infrastructure development. The Zojila Tunnel, planned as a 13.5-kilometre extension, will further integrate the region with the rest of the country, enhancing economic opportunities and improving the quality of life for residents. Acknowledgement is due to the 1,500 personnel who laboured under challenging conditions to realise this ambitious project. Their dedication underscores the nation’s commitment to progress and development. The Z-Morh Tunnel is more than just a passage through the mountains; it is a gateway to a brighter, more connected future for the region.
