World Leaders Call for Action to Achieve Sustainable Development

In a universal call to action, world leaders are urging for a Decade of Action and delivery for sustainable development, aiming to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the target date of 2030. Adopted by all UN Member States in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, these 17 goals aim to end poverty, protect the planet, and improve people’s lives and prospects worldwide.

Despite progress being made in various regions, the overall action to meet the SDGs is not advancing at the required speed or scale. UN Secretary-General called for mobilisation across all sectors of society at three levels: global action to secure greater leadership, resources, and smarter solutions for the SDGs; local action to embed necessary transitions in policies, budgets, and people action, involving youth, civil society, private sector, academia, and other stakeholders to generate an unstoppable movement for transformation.

The core focus of the 2020-2030 decade is the need to address growing poverty, empower women and girls, and tackle the climate emergency. While more people worldwide are experiencing improved lives compared to a decade ago, inequalities and climate change threaten to undo these gains.

Investing in inclusive and sustainable economies can unleash significant opportunities for shared prosperity, and the necessary political, technological, and financial solutions are within reach.

Sustainable development is defined as development that meets the present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It calls for concerted efforts to build an inclusive, sustainable and resilient future for both people and the planet. Harmonizing three core elements – economic growth, social inclusion, and environmental protection – is crucial for achieving sustainable development.

Eradicating poverty in all its forms and dimensions is a fundamental requirement for sustainable development. This necessitates promoting sustainable, inclusive, and equitable economic growth, creating opportunities for all, reducing inequalities, improving living standards, fostering equitable social development and inclusion, and promoting integrated and sustainable management of natural resources and ecosystems.

As the world enters a critical phase in the pursuit of sustainable development, global leaders are emphasising the need for immediate action. With a clear focus on the SDGs, this Decade of Action aims to mobilise resources, strengthen institutions, and generate an unstoppable movement to ensure a better future for generations to come.
