Winter Spike in Cold, Flu, and Constipation Mumbai Doctors Advise Caution

As Mumbai ushers in the winter season, doctors are raising concerns over a significant spike in cases of cold, flu, and constipation, particularly among children aged 8 to 12. The cold weather, combined with changes in lifestyle—such as reduced physical activity, dehydration, and alterations in diet—are major contributors to the uptick in these health issues.

With winter in full swing, many children are experiencing respiratory infections and digestive problems, resulting in a sharp increase in hospital visits. Dr. Sanju Sidaraddi, Consultant Pediatrician and Neonatologist at Motherhood Hospitals in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai, shared that her hospital is seeing around 30 cases per week of cold, flu, and constipation among children. The cold and flu symptoms, such as body aches, fatigue, and nasal congestion, are coupled with digestive issues like bloating, hard stools, and difficulty in passing stools. “The cold weather causes children to drink less water, consume fewer fruits and vegetables, and engage in minimal physical activity—all of which contribute to constipation,” explained Dr. Sidaraddi. As temperatures drop, it becomes more difficult for children to stay active, and the lack of hydration exacerbates the problem.

Experts recommend several precautions to protect children during the colder months. First and foremost, ensuring that children wear warm clothing, including sweaters, jackets, gloves, and ear muffs, is crucial. Good personal hygiene practices, such as following cough etiquette, washing hands regularly, and wearing masks, can significantly reduce the spread of viral infections. Dietary adjustments are also essential. Children should be encouraged to eat a balanced diet rich in fiber—fruits, vegetables, and whole grains—while avoiding junk and processed foods. Drinking adequate amounts of water and consuming warm liquids like soups and teas can help keep the digestive system functioning well and prevent constipation.

Dr. Sidaraddi stressed the importance of timely medical attention for both cold and flu symptoms. “Flu vaccines should not be missed, and parents must be vigilant about any unusual symptoms. Constipation can be managed by maintaining a healthy diet, staying hydrated, and avoiding the straining associated with difficult bowel movements,” she said. If necessary, parents should consult a doctor for appropriate laxatives or other treatments. In addition to these preventive measures, indoor exercises—such as stretching, yoga, or simple home workouts—can help children stay active despite the cold. Regular physical activity not only boosts immunity but also aids digestion, which is crucial for preventing constipation.
