Wind Power Curtailment in Tamil Nadu Sparks Concerns

In Tamil Nadu, early onset of wind power generation has faced challenges as Tangedco (Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation) curtailed production to ensure grid stability.

Despite the state witnessing a peak wind power generation of 5,025 megawatts (MW) and an impressive output of 102.71 million units (Mu) over a 24-hour period, Tangedco had to limit generation from 14 windmills over varying durations totaling 24 hours. This action has sparked complaints from wind energy generators, particularly those affiliated with the Tamil Nadu Spinning Mills Association (Tasma), which represents numerous captive wind energy producers. According to Tasma’s advisor, if these curtailed windmills had operated uninterrupted, the state could have injected even more green energy into the grid.

The power consumption forecast for the day was 370.62Mu, but the actual consumption surged to 392.6Mu due to hot weather conditions, resulting in frequent and significant load shedding. The disparity between supply and heightened demand led to extended blackouts at multiple substations and feeders on the same day. Despite a generation forecast of 100.38Mu, only 93.05Mu of wind energy was evacuated, reflecting the impact of curtailment.

Wind energy generators expressed their dissatisfaction, noting that they were not informed beforehand about the curtailments. The advisor pointed out that although curtailments have decreased compared to previous years, achieving 100% evacuation of wind power remains crucial for maximising green energy contributions to the grid.

In response to the grievances, Tangedco officials overseeing non-conventional energy sources stated that they have instructed field officials to avoid curtailing wind power generation. While no formal representation from the wind energy sector has been received yet, Tangedco has assured that they will investigate the matter.

The situation highlights the ongoing challenges in balancing renewable energy integration with grid stability. Wind energy stakeholders are advocating for uninterrupted generation to fully leverage Tamil Nadu’s substantial wind power potential, stressing the importance of clear communication and strategic planning to address the increasing energy demands efficiently.
