Western Railway Implements Cutting-Edge Dashcams for Enhanced Crew Monitoring

In a pioneering move towards bolstering operational safety, Western Railway (WR) has initiated the installation of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras on the fronts of local trains, focusing on crew activities.

This ground-breaking initiative marks the first-time deployment of such cameras, serving the function of a black box, and is set to play a crucial role in enhancing the monitoring and analysis of crew operations. WR officials have confirmed the commencement of the installation process for the Crew Voice and Video Recording System (CVVRS), incorporating three strategically positioned CCTVs within the motorman’s cabin (motor cab). One camera, positioned at the front side of the cabin, is designed to record tracks, rail lines, technical anomalies, and overhead equipment. According to a senior WR official, this CCTV system will be instrumental in investigations, serving as an effective tool to analyse crew operations, especially in cases of unusual occurrences.

As part of the ongoing implementation, eight out of the total 226 motor cabs have been equipped with the CVVRS. The necessary material for outfitting 43 additional motor cabs is already available, with plans to complete installations by the end of April 2024, as disclosed by another WR official. The comprehensive CVVRS setup will include two additional CCTV cameras inside the motor cab, dedicated to monitoring the activities of the running crew, namely the motorman and guard, aiding in the investigation of operational failures. This proactive measure not only ensures clarity in cases of Signal Passed At Danger (SPAD) incidents but also proves invaluable in the event of severe rail accidents, facilitating the recording and storage of critical data within the system. The introduction of front-facing CCTVs on local trains aligns with recommendations from a five-member committee report, prompted by a tragic accident involving rail staff in Vasai in January.

The committee underscored the necessity of recording the front view from the motor cab, alongside event-logging of horn operations and controlling train headlight brightness. Additionally, the report highlighted the urgency for secured pathways alongside tracks and refuge spots at vulnerable locations. WR officials have already initiated the identification process for creating such pathways to ensure the safety of rail employees during train movements. As WR advances in integrating state-of-the-art dashcam technology, the railway sector takes a significant leap forward in fortifying crew monitoring and ensuring the utmost safety in operations. This strategic move reflects a commitment to proactive safety measures and underscores the importance of leveraging technology for comprehensive rail infrastructure enhancement.
