Mumbai’s intercity rail connectivity has received a timely boost with the extension of special train services between Dadar and Bhusaval until February 2026, a move aimed at easing mounting passenger pressure on one of western India’s busiest corridors. The decision reflects a broader effort to strengthen sustainable public transport capacity amid rising urban and regional mobility demands.
Railway officials confirmed that two pairs of special fare services operating on weekly and tri-weekly schedules will now continue operations for another year. The extension applies to both directions, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity between Mumbai’s central hub at Dadar and Bhusaval, a key rail junction serving northern Maharashtra and parts of central India. The services are widely used by migrant workers, small traders, students, and families travelling between urban and semi-urban centres. According to officials, the move responds to consistently high occupancy levels observed over recent months. “Passenger demand on this route has remained strong, particularly during weekends, festival seasons, and agricultural cycles,” an official said, adding that extending existing services was a more efficient solution than introducing entirely new trains at short notice.
Urban mobility experts say such extensions are critical for cities like Mumbai, where railways remain the backbone of both daily commuting and longer-distance travel. By expanding capacity within the existing network, the railways can reduce overcrowding, improve travel reliability, and limit the environmental costs associated with increased private vehicle use. Rail-based travel continues to offer a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to road transport, aligning with broader goals of low-emission urban growth. The weekly Dadar–Bhusaval special service has now been extended until late February 2026, while the tri-weekly service will operate through the same period. Advance booking for the extended trips opens at the end of December through reservation counters and online platforms, providing passengers with greater certainty for long-term travel planning.
