Indian Railways has embarked on a transformative journey to modernise 21 railway stations across Western Odisha under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, with an investment of ₹900 crore.
This ambitious initiative aims to revamp key stations such as Rourkela, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, and Titlagarh, enhancing passenger experience and fostering regional development. The redevelopment plans encompass state-of-the-art amenities, including spacious waiting halls, modern ticketing systems, improved sanitation facilities, and digital information boards. Accessibility features like lifts, escalators, and foot overbridges are being incorporated to assist senior citizens, differently-abled individuals, and families. Additionally, stations will offer free Wi-Fi, enhanced security systems, and dedicated spaces for local artisans under the ‘One Station One Product’ initiative, promoting local economies.
Environmental sustainability is a cornerstone of the project. The stations are being designed with green building standards, integrating renewable energy sources, water conservation techniques, and modern waste management systems. These measures align with Indian Railways’ broader goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. The redevelopment also focuses on improving multimodal connectivity. Stations will feature dedicated pick-up and drop-off zones, expanded parking facilities, and seamless integration with other modes of transport, reducing congestion and enhancing commuter convenience.
This initiative is part of a larger plan to modernise 57 stations across Odisha, reflecting a significant commitment to infrastructure development in the region. By upgrading these stations, Indian Railways aims to boost economic growth, improve travel experiences, and contribute to the creation of sustainable, inclusive urban spaces.
