Water Supply Hit in Navi Mumbai After Major Pipeline Leak

Residents of Navi Mumbai were faced with a temporary disruption in water supply following a significant pipeline leakage that occurred on Wednesday. The leak, which took place near the Marble Market in Kalamboli, involved the 2042 mm diameter main water pipeline originating from the Morbe Dam. The incident caused a severe drop in water pressure across large parts of the city, affecting daily routines for thousands of residents.

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) responded swiftly to the crisis, implementing a rapid repair operation that lasted approximately six hours. According to NMMC officials, the water supply was shut down from the Bhokarpada Water Treatment Plant to allow for immediate repair work. The repair was prioritised to ensure that water distribution could resume as quickly as possible. Despite these efforts, water supply remained severely impacted in multiple areas of the city on Wednesday evening. As a result of the pipeline rupture, water distribution in parts of Navi Mumbai, including key localities like Kharghar and Kamothe, was suspended for an extended period. CIDCO areas also experienced a significant drop in water supply.

In a statement, the NMMC urged residents to exercise caution and use water judiciously while the repair work was underway. They also assured the public that normal water distribution would be restored once the necessary repairs were completed. This isn’t the first time residents have faced water shortages due to pipeline issues. On February 4, a similar situation arose when the NMMC had to undertake urgent repairs to the Morbe main pipeline near Belpada Metro Station. The repair work resulted in a suspension of water supply in multiple areas, including Belapur, Nerul, and Vashi, from 10 AM to 8 PM.

As water supply issues continue to impact residents, the NMMC has pledged to focus on strengthening and maintaining the city’s water infrastructure to avoid future disruptions. The corporation’s quick response to the Kalamboli pipeline leak demonstrates its commitment to addressing infrastructure challenges in a timely manner. However, the recurring nature of these water supply disruptions raises concerns about the long-term reliability of Navi Mumbai’s water systems.
