The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has announced a significant interruption in the drinking water supply across several areas of Hyderabad. This disruption is attributed to the pipeline shifting activities undertaken by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) for drainage construction near Church Gate, Balapur Road. The affected areas will experience either a complete halt or a substantial reduction in water pressure for 24 hours, starting from 9 PM on Friday, August 30, until 9 PM on Saturday, August 31.
This planned water supply cut will impact a broad swath of Hyderabad, with some of the most affected neighbourhoods including Riyasath Nagar, where residents of Raja Narasimha Colony, Indra Nagar, Pisal Banda, Dargah Buranshahi, Gazi-Millat, GM Chowni, Lalitha Bagh, Uppuguda, and several others will face disruptions. Key institutions and facilities, such as Owaisi Hospital, DRDO, Midhani, BDL, CRPF, and Kendriya Vidyalaya, are also expected to be without water during this period. In the Saidabad locality, the water shortage will affect Hasnabad, Khalanda Nagar, Santhosh Nagar Old Colony and New Colony, as well as areas around Yadagiri Kaman, MIGH, HIGH, LIGH Colonies, Fahaba Masjid, Maruthi Nagar, Pochamma Gadda, and Hanuman Tailor Galli. Similarly, in Sahebnagar, water supply interruptions are anticipated in Baba Nagar, Maqbool Nagar, GM Nagar, and Quadri Colony.
This water disruption is not an isolated incident. Similar outages were reported in June and July this year, causing significant inconvenience to residents. In July, areas under the Lingampally, Borabanda, and Shaikpet reservoirs, along with localities like Manikonda, Narsingi, Manchirevula, and Moosapet, experienced water supply interruptions due to repair work at the Peddapur and Kandi substations. Additionally, areas such as Erragadda, Jubilee Hills, Somajiguda, KPHB, and Hydernagar reported low water pressure during this period. The month of June saw another wave of disruptions, affecting several parts of Hyderabad due to urgent repairs on the NRV valve of the second pump at the Kondapur pump house, a crucial component of the Krishna Drinking Water Supply Scheme Phase-II.
These repeated disruptions have underscored the fragile state of Hyderabad’s water supply infrastructure and the need for proactive maintenance and planning. The HMWSSB, alongside other civic bodies like the GHMC, is under increasing pressure to ensure a reliable water supply to meet the growing demands of Hyderabad’s burgeoning population. Residents are advised to store adequate water in advance and use it judiciously during these periods of disruption. The authorities have assured that they are working diligently to minimise inconvenience and restore normal water supply as swiftly as possible. Nonetheless, these ongoing issues highlight the urgent necessity for comprehensive upgrades to the city’s water supply systems to prevent such disruptions in the future.
