In a strategic move to combat the recurring issue of flooding in Medavakkam and surrounding areas, the Water Resources Department (WRD) has commenced the construction of a surplus water channel connecting Medavakkam Periya Eri to Anai Eri. This ambitious project, costing ₹5.2 crore, aims to prevent overflow into residential neighbour hoods, particularly during adverse weather conditions such as Cyclone Michaung.
The channel, spanning 840 metres in length, 3.5 metres in width, and 1.5 metres in depth, is designed to carry a surplus of Medavakkam Periya Eri at a rate of 500 cusecs to Anai Eri. The natural gradient from Medavakkam Periya Eri to Anai Eri ensures the smooth flow of water, and the cut-and-cover channel design minimises the speed of excess water, effectively preventing overflow. A senior WRD engineer anticipates the completion of this critical infrastructure by May 2024. Once operational, the surplus water channel is expected to alleviate flooding concerns in Medavakkam, Pallikaranai, and Sunnambu Kolathur. By reducing the burden on the Keelkattalai surplus channel, the new infrastructure will mitigate flooding in Sunnambu Kolathur areas as well.
Residents and activists in the Medavakkam region have long advocated for proactive flood prevention measures. Concerns were raised about breaches in the Thaangal area and encroachments near Medavakkam Periya Eri Bund. Civil engineer Dayanand Krishnan, along with Medavakkam residents, submitted a petition and flood audit to Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena in January, urging the construction of surplus channels from Medavakkam Periya Eri. In response to these concerns, the WRD’s initiative not only addresses the immediate need for flood mitigation but also involves a comprehensive approach. The project aims to connect the south Thaangal, an additional water storage space in Medavakkam Periya Eri, with the main lake. This integrated approach signifies a commitment to long-term flood prevention strategies in the region.
