Volunteers to Sustain Ahmedabad’s 3 Million New Trees

In a commendable move to enhance Ahmedabad’s green cover, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has achieved its ambitious target of planting 3 million saplings this monsoon. Now, to ensure the long-term growth and maintenance of these trees, the AMC has partnered with voluntary organisations, marking a significant shift towards community-driven environmental stewardship. The decision, taken at a recent meeting of AMC’s heritage and recreational committee, entrusts local volunteers with the responsibility of nurturing the city’s new green legacy, reflecting a renewed commitment to civic engagement in sustainable urban growth.

The AMC’s plantation efforts follow a substantial investment of Rs 25 crore, which saw the planting of approximately 55.38 lakh trees from 2019 to 2023. Data presented to the AMC Standing Committee earlier this year reveals that while a 60% survival rate was achieved, 40% of the saplings did not survive, primarily due to inadequate maintenance. This pattern underscores the importance of a dedicated care initiative to ensure survival and growth, especially with the addition of 30 lakh trees in 2024. Recent data further highlights regional differences: the western part of Ahmedabad saw 30.04 lakh trees planted, while the eastern section recorded 40.91 lakh, including significant planting efforts along the Sabarmati Riverfront and Metro route.

This green initiative is emblematic of a sustainable approach to urban development. With volunteers now taking the reins, Ahmedabad’s tree maintenance project exemplifies a shared responsibility model that aligns with the city’s sustainability goals. By engaging the community, AMC is not only ensuring the trees’ growth but also instilling a culture of environmental care and awareness. This model could set a precedent for urban green initiatives across India, as community involvement often leads to greater accountability and resourcefulness in public projects.

Further civic developments from the AMC’s recent meeting also include keeping Monte Carlo Oxygen Park on Sindhu Bhavan Road open until 8 pm, giving residents an extended evening access to green spaces. Additionally, the AMC plans to provide uniforms for coaches at its swimming pools, reinforcing standards in its public services. Together, these initiatives reflect the AMC’s holistic approach to urban governance, integrating sustainability, recreation, and community engagement as cornerstones of a more resilient and eco-conscious Ahmedabad.
