The Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) has received approval from the state government to develop seven essential roads within the city’s expanding infrastructure network.
The approved project, estimated at a cost of Rs 154 crore, aims to enhance urban mobility, ease traffic congestion, and provide seamless access to major destinations, including the Bhogapuram airport, which is set to become a key transportation hub for the region. The approved roads are part of a larger master plan aimed at improving connectivity in and around the growing urban area. These routes will link several key localities, including Bheemili, Anandapuram, Gambheeram, and Adavivaram-Sontyam, areas that are expected to see significant growth due to government-led development projects. The project will span a total length of 26.72 kilometres and, once completed, will alleviate the growing traffic pressure on the national highway connecting the Bhogapuram airport.
In 2024, during a review meeting on Visakhapatnam’s urban planning, the Chief Minister had stressed the importance of upgrading the city’s infrastructure to keep pace with its growing population and emerging industries. As part of this vision, the government prioritised the construction of key master plan roads that would connect various parts of the city more efficiently. With these approvals, VMRDA can now move forward with the next steps, including tendering and the commencement of construction activities. The roads are not just designed for immediate transportation needs but also aim to act as development corridors for the region. According to urban development experts, these roads will serve as a catalyst for further investments, particularly in the outskirts of the city, where various government-led initiatives are already underway. These include the Bhogapuram airport project, along with several IT and industrial projects that are expected to fuel the city’s economic growth. The roads will integrate these areas more closely with the city centre, promoting overall urban development.
VMRDA officials highlighted that these roads will not only enhance transportation but also improve the quality of life for the growing number of city residents. The new roads will provide faster, more reliable alternatives for commuting, making it easier for people to access essential services, workplaces, and recreational spaces. Additionally, the construction will be designed with sustainability in mind, ensuring that the development aligns with long-term goals of creating eco-friendly and smart urban spaces. To ensure the efficiency of the project, the government has opted for an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract model, as the total cost exceeds Rs 100 crore. This approach is intended to streamline the tendering process, ensure greater quality control, and maintain a steady cash flow throughout the project’s lifecycle, helping to meet deadlines and maintain high construction standards.
In line with these ambitious goals, the project will utilise Transferable Development Rights (TDRs) to acquire the necessary land for the roadways. This method will allow for a more flexible and efficient land acquisition process, with TDRs being issued for areas within the jurisdiction of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) and VMRDA’s areas beyond it. The issuance of TDRs is expected to ensure that the necessary land for the roads can be acquired without the usual bureaucratic delays that often hamper large-scale infrastructure projects. As the city continues to grow, infrastructure projects like this will be crucial in managing the rising demands for both urban mobility and sustainable urban living. Experts stress that this road development is not just about alleviating traffic but about preparing Visakhapatnam for a future where transportation systems are both efficient and environmentally responsible. With an emphasis on eco-friendly development, these roads are part of a broader effort to ensure that the city’s growth remains sustainable.
Furthermore, the implementation of these roads comes at a time when several major infrastructure projects, such as the Bhogapuram airport and associated industrial developments, are taking shape. The addition of these roads is expected to play a critical role in the efficient movement of people and goods, ultimately contributing to the region’s economic resilience. While the project has received official approval, there will be a focus on addressing any concerns raised by the public or local representatives during the next stages. Ensuring that the development meets the needs of both existing residents and future generations is a priority for VMRDA officials, who are committed to addressing any issues raised during the tendering or construction phases.
The approval of these seven key roads marks a major step forward in Visakhapatnam’s urban development strategy. By providing much-needed infrastructure, the project promises to transform the city’s connectivity, promote sustainable growth, and support the long-term development of areas like Bhogapuram and beyond. With a focus on both transportation efficiency and eco-friendly practices, the project is well-positioned to become a model for future urban infrastructure projects in India.
