Vizhinjam Port Handles 8 Lakh Containers in First Year of Port Operations

Thiruvananthapuram’s Vizhinjam International Seaport has completed a landmark year in operation, achieving a rare global distinction by reaching near full capacity within months of launching commercial services. Over the last 12 months, the port handled 393 ships and 8.3 lakh containers, signalling its emergence as a key maritime node on India’s southeastern coast.

Positioned strategically on the southern tip of the Indian peninsula, Vizhinjam is now ranked as the leading port on India’s southeastern coastline over the last four months. According to senior officials, the port’s rapid scale-up is not just an infrastructural achievement but a statement of India’s evolving capabilities in automated and AI-powered port management. A defining feature of the port’s first year has been its workforce innovation—most notably, the training and deployment of India’s first female automated crane operators. This move toward gender-inclusive port operations has garnered attention beyond national borders and set a precedent for inclusive infrastructure growth in the maritime sector.

The port’s development has also actively supported more than one lakh people through social outreach in healthcare, education, and skills training—showcasing a sustainable and human-centric model of port-led development. Such initiatives align with India’s broader maritime strategy of combining high-capacity logistics with social equity. Looking ahead, the port is preparing for its second phase of construction, pegged at over ₹10,000 crore. The upcoming expansion is expected to further integrate Vizhinjam into the global supply chain, especially with EXIM cargo operations slated to begin once road connectivity improves. Rail infrastructure supporting the port is also under progress, with completion projected within three years.

Officials highlighted that Vizhinjam is not merely a coastal logistics hub but a springboard for India’s maritime aspirations—integrating smart technology, green development, and inclusive growth. As the port steps into its second year, expectations are high that it will become a model of 21st-century port infrastructure for emerging economies.
