Visakhapatnam Port To Undergo ₹2.76 Billion Infrastructure Upgrade For Cargo Efficiency Boost

Visakhapatnam Port has launched capacity-building and public utility projects worth Rs 2.76 billion. The initiative, spearheaded by the Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, is expected to enhance cargo handling, streamline vessel traffic management, and elevate the port’s stature as a key logistics gateway on India’s eastern seaboard. A total of six new infrastructure projects were officially launched, with investments amounting to Rs 1.16 billion. Among them are a new B-Ramp inside the port to boost freight capacity, a finger jetty at the fishing harbour for improved docking facilities, and berthing dolphins at the Outer Harbour Single Point Mooring Terminal.

These projects aim to decongest the existing marine traffic and streamline cargo movement within the port. In addition, the development of a crucial ramp linking the Ambedkar Centenary Flyover to the L-17 corridor is anticipated to provide seamless cargo transit. On the tourism front, the construction of a public promenade near the cruise terminal and new sanitation facilities across 15 points reflects a push to enhance visitor experience and civic utility. Simultaneously, projects worth Rs 1.6 billion were inaugurated, signalling a shift in both operational and digital infrastructure. These include the commissioning of the Oil Refinery Berth-2, modern fire-fighting systems at the offshore terminal, road strengthening works, a covered R-10 shed for protected cargo storage, and the extension of the port’s customs boundary wall.

Digital transformation is a major feature of the upgrade. A new RFID-based gate entry system will improve logistical tracking and security, while an upgraded Port Operating System will enhance port coordination. Of particular note is the deployment of a high-tech Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS) that integrates Automatic Identification System (AIS), radar, and CCTV technologies. The system is further strengthened by a long-term radar data feed from the Indian Coast Guard, enabling real-time tracking of vessel movement and increasing maritime safety. Officials involved in the upgrade emphasised that these developments are part of a broader strategy to position Visakhapatnam Port as a sustainable and smart maritime hub. By incorporating digitisation, enhancing public amenities, and improving cargo throughput, the port seeks to align with national targets on green and efficient port operations.

As cities along India’s coastline push for modern logistics and tourism infrastructure, Visakhapatnam’s multi-pronged development model could set the tone for future urban-port collaborations, ensuring equitable access while enabling economic growth.
