Visakhapatnam Port Launches Rs 276 Crore Capacity Building Initiatives For Growth
Visakhapatnam Port is undergoing a significant transformation with the launch of multiple capacity-building initiatives totalling over ₹276 crore. These strategic projects aim to modernise port infrastructure, enhance cargo handling efficiency, and elevate the port’s status as a leading global maritime hub. This substantial investment underscores a commitment to driving economic growth, creating opportunities, and strengthening India’s maritime capabilities, aligning with the vision for sustainable and inclusive urban development.
The foundation stones were laid for six new projects with a combined investment exceeding ₹116 crore. Key initiatives include the construction of a B-Ramp within the port area, a new finger jetty and wharf in the fishing harbour to boost cargo handling and support the local fishing community, and two additional breasting dolphins at the Oil Streamer Terminal. Further enhancing operational efficiency, the port will see an additional ramp linking the Ambedkar Centenary Flyover to the L-17 corridor. To promote cruise tourism and public engagement, a public promenade near the cruise terminal will be developed, alongside the construction of toilet blocks at 15 locations across the port area, significantly improving amenities and accessibility for all users.
In a significant boost to modernisation and efficiency, a series of projects with a total outlay of ₹159.96 crore were inaugurated. Highlights include the commissioning of the new Oil Refinery Berth-2 and the installation of advanced fire-fighting facilities at the OSTT Berth, enhancing safety and capacity for liquid cargo. Infrastructure upgrades feature a covered storage shed, road improvements, and expansion of the customs boundary wall. Strengthening digital systems, the port will introduce a new RFID gate management system, a modern Port Operating System, and a state-of-the-art Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS), reaffirming Visakhapatnam Port’s commitment to smarter, safer, and more efficient maritime operations.
These comprehensive efforts reflect a commitment to building world-class port infrastructure that drives economic growth, creates opportunities, and strengthens India’s maritime capabilities. By laying the foundation for modern, efficient, and people-centric facilities, the port is taking a crucial step towards realising the vision of a globally competitive and sustainable port sector that will benefit generations to come. This focus on modern infrastructure is vital for fostering zero net carbon and eco-friendly cities by optimising logistics and reducing the environmental footprint of trade.
The strategic development of Visakhapatnam Port is poised to enhance regional trade, support local livelihoods, and improve the overall quality of life for the surrounding communities. The emphasis on inclusive facilities, such as improved amenities and support for the fishing community, contributes to a more equitable and gender-neutral urban environment. As the port expands its capacity and integrates advanced technologies, it solidifies its role as a critical enabler of economic dynamism and a model for sustainable maritime development in India.
