Visakhapatnam Metro Construction Set to Begin in October

Visakhapatnam is poised to embark on a significant urban transformation with the commencement of its metro rail project slated for October 2025.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to modernise the city’s infrastructure, enhance connectivity, and support sustainable urban development. The metro project will feature a double-decker corridor along the 40 km stretch of the old NH-5, from Gajuwaka to Kommadi. This design aims to optimise space and reduce congestion, integrating both road and metro traffic on elevated levels. The project is expected to alleviate traffic bottlenecks, particularly in densely populated areas, and provide a reliable mode of public transportation.

In addition to the metro, the Andhra Pradesh government has announced plans for a semi-ring road around Visakhapatnam, inspired by Hyderabad’s model. This 6-lane road is intended to improve traffic flow and connectivity throughout the city, facilitating smoother movement of goods and people and supporting economic growth. The metro project is also aligned with the development of the Bhogapuram International Airport, scheduled to open in 2026. To ensure seamless connectivity, 22 roads have been proposed to link the airport to various parts of the city, with 15 already approved and under construction. This infrastructure development is expected to bolster Visakhapatnam’s status as a key economic and transportation hub in the region.

The Visakhapatnam Metro Rail Project is estimated to cost ₹11,498 crore for Phase I, covering 46.23 km with 42 stations. The project will be implemented under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with the Centre contributing 40% of the funding and private developers covering the remaining 60%. This approach aims to ensure efficient project execution and foster private sector participation. As Visakhapatnam prepares for these transformative changes, the metro project stands as a testament to the city’s commitment to sustainable urban development, improved connectivity, and enhanced quality of life for its residents.
