Visakhapatnam begins BIMSTEC‑backed port upgrade to boost maritime hub
India has reiterated its ambition to emerge as a global maritime hub, with significant capacity-building initiatives worth over ₹276 crore launched at Visakhapatnam Port. These projects, unveiled during the second Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Ports Conclave, underscore a strategic commitment to modernising port infrastructure, enhancing cargo handling efficiency, and fostering sustainable partnerships across the Bay of Bengal region, crucial for regional prosperity.
The two-day conclave, themed ‘Navigating the Future: Blue Economy, Innovation & Sustainable Partnerships’, brought together ministerial delegations, port authorities, maritime experts, and business leaders from BIMSTEC member countries, including India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. The discussions centred on unlocking the immense potential of the blue economy from the Bay of Bengal region, aligning with India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy, which positions BIMSTEC nations as key partners in regional prosperity.
A series of projects with a total outlay of ₹159.96 crore were inaugurated at the port, signifying a significant boost to modernisation and efficiency. These include the commissioning of the new Oil Refinery Berth-2 and the installation of advanced fire-fighting facilities, enhancing safety and capacity for liquid cargo. Infrastructure upgrades feature a covered storage shed, improved roads, and an expanded customs boundary wall. Crucially, the port will introduce a new RFID gate management system, a modern Port Operating System, and a state-of-the-art Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS), reaffirming its commitment to smarter, safer, and more efficient maritime operations.
Furthermore, foundation stones were laid for six new projects with a combined investment exceeding ₹116 crore. Key initiatives include the construction of a B-Ramp within the port area, a new finger jetty and wharf in the fishing harbour to boost cargo handling and support the local fishing community, and additional breasting dolphins. To enhance public engagement and promote cruise tourism, a public promenade near the cruise terminal will be developed, alongside improved amenities across the port area. Together, these projects aim to strengthen Visakhapatnam Port’s role as a modern, inclusive, and globally competitive maritime hub.
The collective efforts are set to modernise port infrastructure, improve cargo handling efficiency, and elevate the port’s status as a leading global maritime hub. These new projects reflect a commitment to building world-class port infrastructure that drives economic growth, creates opportunities, and strengthens India’s maritime capabilities. By laying the foundation for modern, efficient, and people-centric facilities, the nation is taking another step towards realising its vision of a globally competitive and sustainable port sector that will benefit generations to come.
The establishment of a BIMSTEC Sustainable Maritime Transport Centre in Mumbai further underscores the region’s dedication to sustainable maritime practices. Through joint feasibility studies, Public-Private Partnerships (PPP), and skill development of the maritime workforce, BIMSTEC aims to transform the region into a thriving hub of global trade, tourism, and sustainable economic progress. This integrated approach is vital for fostering zero net carbon and eco-friendly cities by optimising logistics and reducing the environmental footprint of trade, ensuring equitable growth and opportunities for all.
