The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is set to introduce a virtual smart card system, eliminating the need for physical smart cards or cash transactions. This innovative feature will be available through the DMRC’s official mobile application, Momentum 2.0, within a few weeks, revolutionising the way commuters travel across the city. Currently, the QR-code-based ticketing system on the app only supports single-journey tickets. However, with the introduction of the virtual smart card, or wallet, passengers will soon be able to make multiple journeys using a single QR code generated on the app. The virtual card system is currently undergoing trials and is expected to be launched by the end of August or early September, according to a DMRC spokesperson.
The DMRC spokesperson explained that the new ‘store value QR code’ system is designed to provide a seamless and efficient ticketing experience. Commuters will be able to top up their virtual wallet as needed, and the balance will be automatically deducted with each journey. This system eliminates the need for purchasing a new physical or virtual ticket for every trip, simplifying the process and reducing the dependency on physical entities like cards or tickets. One of the key advantages of this virtual card system is its eco-friendliness and economic efficiency. It offers commuters a cashless, hassle-free travel experience without the need to carry a physical smart card. The virtual wallet can be recharged using various payment methods, making it accessible and convenient for all users.
The DMRC has highlighted that this new system not only makes travelling more convenient but also enhances security and user experience. Since the stored QR code is hosted on the backend, the commuter’s balance remains secure even if their mobile device is lost or damaged. In such cases, users can simply log into their account from another device to regain access to their digital wallet and continue their journeys without any disruption. Furthermore, the digital wallet recharge process is streamlined, eliminating the need for commuters to visit Customer Care Centres or Automatic Vending Machines. This advancement underscores DMRC’s commitment to adopting sustainable and technologically advanced solutions that cater to the growing demand for efficient urban transportation.
