Virar witnessed a significant commuter disruption on Sunday as a Ro-Ro ferry service linking Saphale and Virar faced a technical snag, leaving over 70 passengers and 52 vehicles stranded for nearly two hours. Officials confirmed that despite the incident, no injuries were reported, and all passengers were safely evacuated once the ferry could dock at Narangi jetty.
The Saphale-Virar Ro-Ro service, an innovative commuter solution that ferries vehicles and passengers across the Vaitarna creek in just 10 minutes, is increasingly seen as a sustainable alternative to road transport. However, the recent hydraulic failure, caused by a burst hose pipe affecting the ferry ramp, exposed vulnerabilities in the system, particularly under low tide conditions which further hampered the docking process. According to port authorities, the ferry had departed from Jalsar in Saphale at 5.40 pm and reached Virar by 5.50 pm. Upon arrival, the ramp failed to deploy, preventing vehicles from disembarking. Passengers reported tense moments on board as they awaited assistance, though officials swiftly managed the situation without casualties.
Experts note that while Ro-Ro ferries offer a low-carbon, efficient commuting option compared to congested road travel, incidents such as this underline the need for enhanced maintenance protocols and real-time monitoring systems. Incorporating preventive hydraulic system checks, regular equipment overhauls, and adaptive scheduling based on tidal patterns could significantly reduce such disruptions. Eyewitnesses observed that the stranded vehicles, including small commercial trucks and private cars, remained on board for the duration of the delay. Port officials highlighted that quick response teams were deployed to stabilise the ramp and ensure safe unloading, demonstrating effective crisis management.
