Vijayawada, Guntur Among Five Andhra Cities Win 2024 Swachh Cleanliness Awards

Andhra Pradesh has emerged as a national frontrunner in urban cleanliness, with five of its municipal corporations earning accolades in the Swachh Survekshan Awards 2024. Recognised under various population and innovation-based categories, cities like Vijayawada, Guntur, Tirupati, Visakhapatnam, and Rajahmundry were honoured for their outstanding contributions to sustainable urban sanitation and waste management systems.

In the over 10 lakh population category, Vijayawada Municipal Corporation stood out for integrating citizen engagement and robust waste processing infrastructure into daily sanitation efforts. Meanwhile, Guntur and Tirupati earned recognition for mid-sized city innovation and bio-resource utilisation. In the special Ministerial Category, the Greater Visakhapatnam and Rajahmundry municipal corporations were acknowledged for their scalable models in smart sanitation and inclusive cleanliness drives. Officials attributed this collective success to a holistic governance model rooted in grassroots awareness campaigns, efficient municipal workforce coordination, and decentralised waste treatment infrastructure. While these awards mark institutional success, they also underscore the vital role of citizen participation in transforming urban spaces.

Experts in urban development see this achievement as more than just recognition—it reflects a replicable framework that other states could emulate. Andhra’s Swachh mission has been distinguished by its hybrid of technology and traditional public health principles, which include round-the-clock waste monitoring, rainwater harvesting, and decentralised sanitation solutions. The achievement not only reinforces Andhra Pradesh’s leadership in civic innovation but also sets a precedent for integrating environmental sustainability with inclusive governance. Urban planners and policy observers believe that such recognition will enhance the State’s eligibility for future green funding and smart infrastructure grants under national schemes. As Andhra continues to promote decentralised waste systems and climate-resilient urban planning, the awards reaffirm a growing public consciousness towards cleanliness as a shared civic responsibility.

As cities in Andhra Pradesh scale their ambitions for clean, equitable, and resilient urban environments, the accolades from Swachh Survekshan 2024 validate years of ground-level planning and collaborative governance. The recognition also signals a shift in India’s urban development narrative—where people, policy, and planet converge to create healthier, greener, and more dignified cities for all.
