Nearly a month after the harrowing incident that saw a massive billboard collapse in Ghatkopar, victims of the tragedy find themselves grappling with ongoing challenges and unmet needs. The aftermath of the collapse, which claimed 17 lives and left 74 injured, has left many survivors in dire straits, with mounting medical bills and disrupted livelihoods.
Among the injured is a 55-year-old taxi driver, once the main provider for his family, who now finds himself incapacitated due to multiple spine fractures sustained during the incident. His daily earnings, crucial for supporting his family of four, have been abruptly halted, leaving them reliant on external assistance for basic needs. Despite spending three weeks at Rajawadi Hospital and undergoing treatment, he faces a lengthy recovery period ahead, rendering him unable to work or contribute to his household. Similarly, another victim, a 40-year-old catering company employee, has been readmitted to Rajawadi Hospital after initial discharge, as complications from his leg fracture necessitate surgery. The financial strain on his family has intensified, with additional expenses for medical treatment and the impending academic year costs for his children.
While some relief is provided by the hospital through free treatment, the burden of commuting expenses and out-of-pocket medication costs remains a concern for the affected families. As they continue to grapple with the aftermath of the tragedy, there is a growing outcry for financial assistance and compensation from the authorities responsible for the incident. The incident, which occurred on May 13 amid strong winds and thunderstorms, has left a lasting impact on the lives of the survivors, underscoring the urgent need for swift action and support to alleviate their suffering. As the one-month mark approaches, the plight of the Ghatkopar billboard collapse victims serves as a stark reminder of the importance of proactive measures to prevent such tragedies and provide adequate support to those affected.
