Vellore Bypass Project to Ease City Traffic Congestion

The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has approved the construction of a 20.4-kilometre-long four-lane bypass. The project, estimated at Rs 753 crore, aims to connect National Highways 75 and 38, providing a seamless route for vehicles bypassing the city centre. The proposed bypass will commence at Vandranthangal on NH-75, a vital corridor linking Vellore to Krishnagiri and Bengaluru, and terminate at Sathumadhurai on NH-38, connecting Vellore to Thoothukudi via Tiruvannamalai and Villupuram.

The alignment predominantly follows a greenfield route, with a 3.25-kilometre section overlapping the existing State Highway 240. This strategic design is anticipated to alleviate traffic bottlenecks and enhance regional connectivity. To facilitate the bypass, land acquisition will be carried out with a 50-metre right-of-way (RoW), exceeding the standard 30 metres. This provision allows for future expansion into a six-lane carriageway with two-lane service roads, adhering to Indian Road Congress (IRC) guidelines. The project is slated for completion within 24 months, with 90% of the RoW to be handed over to the contractor upon mobilisation.

The bypass will feature six culverts for effective drainage and one at-grade junction to facilitate smooth traffic flow. The main carriageway is designed for a speed of 100 km/h, while service roads will support a design speed of 40 km/h. Additional amenities include solar-powered street lighting, truck lay-bys, bus shelters, signage, footpaths, and road safety infrastructure, aligning with the government’s commitment to sustainable and equitable urban development. Upon completion, the bypass is expected to significantly reduce travel time for commuters, particularly those travelling from Villupuram, Kalasapakkam, and Arani to Bengaluru, Chittoor, and Gudiyatham. By circumventing Vellore city, vehicles can bypass congested urban areas, leading to smoother and more efficient transit. Moreover, the improved infrastructure is poised to bolster economic activities, enhance access to medical facilities, and promote tourism in the region.

Incorporating sustainable practices, the project includes the installation of solar-powered street lighting and efficient drainage systems to mitigate flooding risks. These measures reflect a commitment to reducing the environmental footprint and promoting eco-friendly urban mobility solutions. The Vellore bypass project represents a pivotal development in Tamil Nadu’s infrastructure landscape. By addressing traffic congestion, enhancing regional connectivity, and promoting sustainable urban mobility, the initiative aligns with the broader vision of creating zero-net-carbon, eco-friendly, and equitable cities. As the project progresses, it is expected to serve as a model for future infrastructure developments in the region, balancing growth with environmental stewardship.
