Vasco’s MMC in Goa to Implement Paid Parking

The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has resolved to implement paid parking at four key locations surrounding the municipal building, marking a significant step forward after two previous unsuccessful attempts. This initiative, set to commence in the first phase, aims to streamline parking management and generate revenue for the council.

In addition to the parking scheme, the council is addressing other pressing issues. A meeting is planned with fish vendors who have failed to pay the sopo (a local tax) for two months, resulting in a revenue loss for the municipality. This engagement is critical to ensuring compliance and maintaining the council’s revenue streams. The old vegetable market in Vasco is also under scrutiny as part of the council’s efforts to address non-payment issues and other irregularities. These actions reflect the MMC’s commitment to improving municipal operations and financial health.

Furthermore, the council discussed the beautification of Swatantra Path. There are plans to restore this important thoroughfare to its original status, enhancing its aesthetic appeal and functionality. This project is part of a broader initiative to improve urban infrastructure and public spaces in Vasco.
“Fish vendors cannot hold the council at ransom. We will fix a meeting on Friday failing which the council will dare to lock the gates of the fish market. The council is spending lakhs on the maintenance of the fish market, paying a monthly fee of Rs 5 lakh. MMC will not abide by threats and be strict without tolerating any arrogance,” said councillor Fredrick Henriques.

These decisions were made during a recent council meeting, highlighting the MMC’s proactive approach to urban management and development. The implementation of paid parking, in particular, is expected to improve traffic management and provide a steady revenue stream for municipal improvements. The MMC aims to address outstanding financial and operational issues to create a more efficient and appealing urban environment for Vasco’s residents and visitors.
