Urban infrastructure and environmental sustainability, Uttar Pradesh’s Urban Development Minister, AK Sharma, chaired a pivotal review meeting in Varanasi, focusing on critical civic projects aimed at preparing the city for the upcoming monsoon season.
Municipal Commissioner Akshat Verma presented an extensive overview of the ongoing initiatives under the Varanasi Municipal Corporation (VMC), highlighting the phased cleaning of sewer lines and stormwater drains utilizing advanced equipment such as super sucker and bucket machines. This effort is part of a broader strategy to address waterlogging concerns at 80 identified vulnerable locations, with adequate pump arrangements already in place to mitigate potential flooding. Emphasizing the urgency of these measures, Minister Sharma directed that 100% cleaning of all drains and sewers—both large and small—be completed within the next 15 days. He underscored the importance of timely removal of silt and the enforcement of anti-encroachment measures to ensure the effectiveness of these initiatives.
In line with these directives, a dedicated anti-encroachment campaign is set to commence on May 30, aiming to reclaim public spaces and ensure unobstructed drainage systems. Notices have been served to violators, mandating removal within two days, with fines to be imposed on defaulters. Beyond infrastructure improvements, the city is undertaking a comprehensive beautification drive. Minister Sharma proposed landscaping road shoulders with grass and creating pedestrian pathways to make Varanasi dust-free. Additionally, he called for the construction of memorials near the residences of notable personalities and Padma awardees, integrating cultural heritage into the city’s urban landscape.
These initiatives are part of Varanasi’s broader vision to transform into a sustainable, eco-friendly, and equitable city. The implementation of advanced drainage systems, coupled with anti-encroachment measures and beautification projects, reflects a holistic approach to urban development that prioritizes environmental conservation and cultural preservation. As the city gears up for the monsoon season, these proactive measures aim to mitigate the challenges posed by waterlogging and encroachments, ensuring a resilient and vibrant urban environment for its residents.
