The Railways Department is advancing plans to extend the semi-high-speed Vande Bharat service from Jammu to Srinagar, enhancing connectivity across the region and reducing travel time for commuters and pilgrims alike. Currently operating between Katra and Srinagar, the train’s extension is expected to link Jammu directly with the Valley, bringing the convenience of faster, comfortable travel to a wider population.
Railway officials overseeing the project have confirmed that preparations are in full swing. The extension had faced delays due to significant damage to railway tracks caused by recent heavy rains and flooding. Restoration works are being executed at an accelerated pace, with officials emphasising that operations will commence only after all safety protocols are met. The existing Katra–Srinagar Vande Bharat service has already transformed travel for residents and visitors by providing a high-speed alternative to traditional rail and road services. With the planned Jammu extension, the service is projected to operate on a daily schedule, streamlining journeys between Jammu and Srinagar and supporting tourism, religious pilgrimages, and regional mobility.
Railway experts highlighted that the expansion of Vande Bharat services aligns with broader objectives of sustainable transport development. By offering a high-capacity, energy-efficient alternative to conventional travel, the extension supports low-carbon transit and reduces road congestion in the region. Officials also noted that the service represents a broader shift towards integrating semi-high-speed trains into India’s national railway network, supporting equitable access to modern transport while promoting environmentally responsible travel solutions. Commuters and pilgrims are encouraged to stay updated on operational schedules and booking options, which will be made available on official railway platforms once the extension is inaugurated.
