Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Redefines Overnight Travel

Indian Railways is poised to revolutionise long-distance overnight travel with the introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train.

Designed to offer a modern, high-speed alternative to traditional overnight services, this train aims to enhance passenger comfort, safety, and efficiency. Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is engineered to provide a superior travel experience. It features 16 coaches, including AC 3-tier, AC 2-tier, and First AC compartments, accommodating a total of 823 passengers. The train is designed to operate at speeds up to 160 km/h, significantly reducing travel time on major routes.

Passenger comfort is a priority, with ergonomic sleeper berths, modern toilets with shower facilities, and USB charging ports at each seat. The train also boasts Wi-Fi connectivity and improved sound insulation, ensuring a pleasant journey for all passengers. Safety is paramount in the design of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train. The train is equipped with the Kavach collision prevention system, fire-resistant materials, and reinforced buffers to minimise the impact of accidents. These features align with Indian Railways’ commitment to enhancing passenger safety across its network.

In line with India’s sustainability goals, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is part of a broader initiative to modernise the railway system. Indian Railways has allocated over $22 billion for infrastructure upgrades, including the introduction of Vande Bharat trains and the electrification of broad-gauge lines. These efforts aim to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030 . The production of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is underway at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, with additional contributions from Titagarh Rail Systems and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). Prototype trains have undergone successful testing on various routes, demonstrating their readiness for commercial service.

The first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is expected to commence operations by the end of 2025, with services connecting major cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata. Future plans include expanding the fleet to over 300 trains by 2029, enhancing connectivity across the country. This initiative reflects Indian Railways’ commitment to providing passengers with a modern, efficient, and sustainable travel option. The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is set to become a cornerstone of India’s railway modernisation efforts, offering a glimpse into the future of rail travel in the country.
