The state of Uttar Pradesh marked the commencement of Van Mahotsav 2024 with a poignant theme, ‘Ek Paudha Maa Ke Naam’, which translates to ‘A sapling in the name of Mother’. This environmental initiative, spearheaded by the Minister of State for Forest, Environment and Climate Change, KP Malik, underscores the intrinsic value of nurturing nature akin to the care provided by a mother. In a ceremonial event at the Kukrail range on Monday, Minister Malik planted ‘Harishankari’ saplings, a sacred trio of banyan, peepal, and pakar trees. This act set in motion a week-long celebration aimed at enhancing green cover and fostering ecological consciousness. The minister also distributed saplings to schoolchildren, symbolising the transference of environmental stewardship to the younger generation.
“Just as a mother nurtures her child, we must plant and care for saplings in honour of our mothers, thereby conserving our environment,” stated Malik. This year, the initiative aims to plant an impressive 35 crore saplings across the state, reflecting an ambitious drive towards reforestation and environmental sustainability. The Awadh forest division hosted a significant programme, orchestrated by Renu Singh, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (APCCF), and Sheetanshu Pandey, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), both from Lucknow. The forest department, the nodal agency for this massive plantation drive, has outlined measures to ensure the survival and growth of the saplings. These include the installation of tree guards and the construction of protective boundaries around the plantation sites.
Minister of State for Forest, Environment and Climate Change (Independent Charge), AK Saxena, emphasised the importance of community involvement in this endeavour. He has directed the department to raise awareness about local plantation sites and foster a strong emotional connection between the community and the saplings. This approach is expected to enhance the upkeep and protection of the newly planted trees, ensuring their growth and contribution to the environment.Van Mahotsav, celebrated annually in the first week of July, serves as a crucial reminder of the need for environmental conservation. This year’s theme, resonating deeply with cultural values, seeks to imbue the act of planting with a sense of personal and emotional investment, thereby encouraging more mindful and sustained environmental efforts. The initiative reflects Uttar Pradesh’s commitment to combating climate change and enhancing biodiversity. It also highlights the role of governmental and community collaboration in addressing ecological challenges. As the week progresses, it is hoped that the collective effort will significantly contribute to a greener and more sustainable future for the state and its residents.
