The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) has reported a concerning outbreak of cholera in the city, with two confirmed cases prompting immediate public health measures. Dr. Devesh Patel, VMC’s Medical Officer for Health, confirmed that a 45-year-old woman from Hathikhana and another individual from Ganesh Nagar tested positive for cholera.
VMC has temporarily halted water supply in the affected areas to contain further contamination. One of the doctor underscored the urgency, stating, “The water supply department has swiftly initiated repairs to address the contamination in the network. Meanwhile, water is being supplied through tankers to ensure continued access.” Despite proactive measures, the timing of test results has posed challenges, as treatment for suspected cases begins before confirmatory reports are received. “The test results for these cases arrived after treatment had commenced. This underscores the critical need for swift response protocols in suspected cholera cases,” he explained. The outbreak has triggered heightened vigilance across Vadodara, with 27 patients currently under treatment for suspected cholera. Additionally, VMC has dispatched fresh samples to government laboratories to monitor the situation closely.
Alongside cholera, Vadodara is grappling with a surge in other waterborne diseases. VMC reported 48 cases of acute diarrheal disease, along with 454 suspected cases of typhoid and 311 cases of viral Hepatitis A and E. This alarming spike underscores the broader public health challenges facing the city. In light of these developments, VMC has intensified its health surveillance efforts and urged residents to adhere to precautionary measures. The civic body remains committed to swiftly containing the spread of waterborne illnesses and ensuring public safety through comprehensive healthcare interventions.
